A sweet treat for all
Returning to Seattle after 23 years, Englebert Humperdinck's (not that one) ambitious Hansel and Gretel receives a provocative adaptation from Laurent Pelly. Based on the disturbing tale from the Brothers Grimm, this dream-like production sees the story updated to a strange modern world, where themes of poverty, fear, love and bravery resonate as our heroes battle the perils of the haunted forest, as the search for dinner becomes a quest alltogether more sinister.
What is the story of Hansel and Gretel
Food and the lack of it propel the story of two children who dream not of toys but of having enough to eat. When the family cupboard is bare, their mother sends them into the very dark forest to find strawberries. Once inside, they soon realise that there is more to the wood than meets the eye. Whilst encounters with the Sandman and the Dew Fairy turn out to be lovely, they find themselves fighting for their lives when they run into the Gingerbread witch.
