Quasimodo amazes!
As a fairly new theatre goer, I don’t know quite what to expect but since seeing this production of The Hunchback of Notre Dame I may forever compare all musicals to this performance. I was worried the interpreters would be a distraction but nothing about this show was distracting. It was so moving. The actor portraying Quasimodo was superb! His emotions, speech and overall acting was awe inspiring. It was wonderful to see so many of the deaf community present for this as well. I would recommend this show to anyone who wants to be thoroughly entertained and moved. My emotions ranged from chills during Esmeralda’s Outcast song to tears at the end. I found myself grinning from ear to ear during much of the performance. Thank you 5th Avenue for another fantastic production.
Fabulous
Every able bodied person should see it. The stagging screams a message some may not be able to hear (understand). It is a real hand waver! Thank you 5th!
Sound engineering needs work
Great musical, powerful performances but multiple times throughout the musical I would miss part of what was said or would miss entire lines because their mics were not turned in time
It needs THE song.
We saw the 2nd night's performance. I am not familiar with the 5th Avenue theater as a venue, so am not sure if the way the sound system is set up is typical, but we found it to be overmodulated such that when the singers were loud, the sound was too loud, and a bit harsh. But, most importantly to me, while there was a LOT of singing, there wasn't any melody that had any kind of 'catchy' tune, such that you remember it after leaving the theatre. The overall culture of songs was so similar, one to the next , with the very palpable Disney pattern, that they all blended into each other. Additionally, many of the singers were not able to hold the long notes with clear stability, often ranging to offkey here and there. The performance by the young man who played Quasimodo was very good, as was Esmeralda and the 'Master'. At times, the signing by the actors became a distraction, the rest of the audience seemed to appreciate the show more than we did, with a rousing applause at the
Great idea. Poorly executed.
I liked that this musical included the deaf community as it did. That warms my heart. I hope they conutine to find ways to include all communities. But the play itself was not good. I've been to probably a dozen musicals at 5th Ave. This was unquestionably the worst of the lot. The script was boring and bad, the songs are not catchy, or memorable. The sound mix was bad. The stage set was great, but it never changed. So all these different spots in Paris some how was in the cathredal. It was one notch above community theater, and two notches above Cats (the worst musical ever made). I would have left early if it wasn't for feeling that would be really rude and disrespectful in the moment. Plus, i paid for it and did nitnwant to compete with Mariners traffic. The effort and energy was there. Everyone was professional. The priest was great. Esmeralda was well done. It just didn't click at all for me, my wifr, and by body language, those sitting next to us.
