WONDERFUL CAST- SO SO WRITING

The cast set and general art direction were lovely for this. Truly there are some gems of actors and actresses. The performance I saw had many understudies, but they all performed it admirably with few slipups. Bingley in particular was charming, as were his songs. Mrs Bennet is a hoot, as is Caroline Bingley. Our leads are talented singers- and there is some charm to be had between Elizabeth and Darcy- but they aren't given enough time to breath. The script is one that would be highly confusing to anyone not familiar with pride and prejudice, and the songs are less than memorable. The major conflict of Jane Austen either rejecting or embracing romance feels forced, and the constant refrain of 'Choices' doesn't seem an actual theme we see implemented in the story as much them TRYING to figure out why Austen is there at all. There is some charm in Austen's presence, but it wears rather thin- I found myself loathing the musical numbers and longing for more straight up Austen quotes

AUSTEN'S PRIDE OCTOBER 5TH

I found the cast, concept, staging , and music all very engaging. I was heartbreakingly disappointed because despite being in front rows, the sound levels were too low microphone wise to hear the quick banter especially when blocking had performers turning and moving away from audience and even one speech from actor calling from off stage visible thru a screen but completely unintelligible . When in desperation wheeled down all the way in my wheelchair and I asked them at sound booth during intermissionI tried to relay this difficulty cuz I wanted it to be better and it was such a simple fix I was eye rolled at , thanked and dismissed. Simply put: Fix master gains and/or individual performers mics. If not you are Robbing Austen's Pride of it's Broadway chances. Props to actress playing Elizabeth. In the second act She sang despite the sound tech problems well enough to engage the audience wilst in duet with Darcy. It saved the second act. Somebody please help this delightful cast and get them a better sound guy.

RUSHED, CONFUSING, AND DULL

Elizabeth Bennett is one of western literature’s most complex characters, and Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice is a story with great narrative scope. The broadway musical, however, rushes through the storyline and simplifies the characters down to hollow shells of who they are. If you don’t know the P&P storyline in depth, you will be completely lost. I know it well and had to fill in huge gaps in order to have the play make sense. Save your money and use it for an outstanding show instead. Then watch the BBC miniseries with Colin Firth as Mr Darcy.
