FABULOUS

The voices and the music were terrific. The sets were incredible. Yes, I know people think Wagner is long and he is, but it is worth every minute of your time to take in this masterpiece. These artists do a fantastic job of bringing the music, the passion, and the artistry to this stage. You will not be disappointed. The audience leaped to their feet before the house lights came on shouting Bravo and clapping. It was exciting, moving, and a real tribute to Seattle Opera.

I HAD TO LEAVE AFTER THE FIRST ACT

You, of course can call me a snob, but I had to leave after the first act. In this case, maybe rather unfortunately, I am German and could only understand and hear a few of the words sung especially by Isolde. I had such high hopes for William's performance and was looking forward to warmth amid anger! Unfortunately, they were vastly crushed by mispronounced words and lack of emotion. I could not hear Isolde's pain or anger and could not feel the love she still feels for Tristan, while planning to kill him. At the same time the orchestra overpowered the singing in a way that even Vinke's beautifully rendered words barely reached my ears, or those of any of the other really wonderful singers. Anyhow, I left with a heavy heart, afraid that the most beautiful love scene in opera might be rendered with precise ration rather than unadulterated passion.
