Why see Seattle Opera - Tristan and Isolde?

Passion will undo them

A tale as old as time, (or at least, a thousand years) Tristan and Isolde has long been considered the ultimate tale of passionate, romantic love in forbidden circumstances. With its universal theme of all-consuming love and bitter-sweet tragedy - it fits perfectly into Wagner's repertoire of epics. Mary Elizabeth Williams makes her role debut as Isolde alongside tenor Stefan Vinke as her doomed lover Tristan.

What is the story?

King Mark of Cornwall has plenty to be worried about: his enemy Morholt of Ireland is threatening invasion and a charismatic stranger, Tristan has turned up at court. Together they take on the fight and on winning, form a strong bond. But when Mark asks Tristan to go to Ireland and get the beautiful Isolde to be his bride, Tristan quickly falls in love with the enigmatic princess. On their return to Cornwall, their affair, aided by a nefarious love potion, carries on, causing chaos in the lives and the hearts of the three, with effects that will change all of them forever...

Fabulous

The voices and the music were terrific. The sets were incredible. Yes, I know people think Wagner is long and he is, but it is worth every minute of your time to take in this masterpiece. These artists do a fantastic job of bringing the music, the passion, and the artistry to this stage. You will not be disappointed. The audience leaped to their feet before the house lights came on shouting Bravo and clapping. It was exciting, moving, and a real tribute to Seattle Opera. ... Read more
