Metronomic drumbeats provided a bare framework as wall-of-sound guitars and breathy vocals shifted in and out of focus. Yet for all the noise, much of the show had a blissful quality, aided by the psychedelic visuals swirling away behind the group.

My Bloody Valentine's First US Tour in 5 Years

Cultivating a cult status since their debut in the late 80s, My Bloody Valentine's heady blend of ethereal melodies and dissonant, fuzz-laden guitars marked them as the forerunners of the shoegaze genre. Five years since they last toured US shores, the iconic purveyors of moody, spaced-out anthems are heading out on tour. The strictly limited, 7-date trek heralds a the rumour of a long awaited EP of new material, followed closely by a full-length album by the end of the year.

Adept at capturing the deepest yearnings of the heart, MBV's bittersweet lyrics and almost unassuming vocal lines are juxtaposed by the slow-burning heaviness of their grunge-tinged arrangements. Songs like Sometimes and To Here Knows When (from seminal album Loveless) are bonafide, wall-of-noise moments when unleashed upon the crowd during their live sets. A beautiful cacophony of swirling synths, scuzzy guitars and hypnotic repetitions awaits...
