LACKING CHARM

So, I saw "School of Rock" on Thursday. I quite like this movie but any charm the movie has is lost in the musical. The main problem is the script. It rushes through the plot points to get to the musical numbers. But except for the songs that are featured in the original movie the rest are instantly forgettable. And I couldn’t understand a word anyone was saying as they screamed out all the innocuous rock lyrics. I mean, this is a musical and the songs are supposed to help tell the story. What good are they if you can’t hear the words? As for the problems with the story, well, the premise is that the kids are shy and awkward, but the first time you see them they are singing and dancing (and moving their desks) all over the place. It’s great that the kids all play their own instruments but progression from nerds to rockers is just too short to be effective. The lead tries his best to be Jack Black but again there is just not enough story verses the frantic musical numbers to get to know the guy. The only charm he or any of the other characters have is remembering what they were in the movie. Some movies do work as musical and even exceed their originals but this ain’t one of them. I’d give it a pass!

ENERGIZING BUT DISAPPOINTING

We left this play feeling energized and the kids and the principal in the play were great but I could have done without the following: gay stereotypes, nagging girlfriend stereotype, some of the language used such as douche bag and slut (the audience is young) and what seemed to be a pedophile joke. We’re it not for these things, I would have given the play 4 stars.

VERY DISAPPOINTED

After not being able to understand what the lead guy was saying or singing for the first 30 min., I wanted to leave. I had purchased two additional tickets for someone who had never been to the Orpheum and I was embarrassed. Yes, talented kids, but beyond that a waste of time and money.

LIKE A THESPIAN TRYING TO WRITE ROCK MUSIC

This did not translate to the stage. It was corny. The music lacked the punch with the exception of the songs they used from the actual movie. Movies shouldn’t be made into plays, especially when said movie is based on classic rock. Add the cliche social justice platitudes and this became the theatre equivalent of a popcorn action flick with no story.

SAVE YOUR MONEY

Intermission, where ARE you? I'm dying! All five in my party immediately jumped up and put on our coats when Act I was finally over. It's like the movie, only with bad acting and lots of dialogue converted into terrible singing. The lead guy is no Jack Black, though he tries, at times. The kids are smart alecs, and the the whole thing feels kind of mean and tone deaf for 2018. Plus, that theatre was burning up hot, and I could not see around the lady in front of me, though I am sure I am taller than her. Sure wish I still had the money and time I wasted on this sadomasochistic activity. I must have done something really bad at some point to deserve this punishment.

DISAPPOINTED

This would be an excellent Youth Theatre production but we were disappointed viewing this as part of our season's ticket offerings at the San Diego Civic Theatre. The kids were cute but the cliche story was ho hum predictable and the acting was mediocre. When a retired couple is spending $150+ for a highly anticipated evening of entertainment we just wanted more than what seemed to be us watching our grandchildren in their school performance. Sorry, thanks for your efforts but thumbs down.

FUN BUT FORGETTABLE

Schools of Rack at the Pantages was a huge disappointment despite extremely talented youngsters and wonderful vocals by Lexi Dorsett Sharp. The same can not be said for the rest of the singing cast. This is a cliche, predictable story and Lloyd Weber's music is, well, lame. There are no memorable songs you sing or hum on the way out of the theatre. Choreography? None, just everyone jumping up and down and one poor little girll who looked like she was trying to shake her pony tail off her head. Sets, lighting, and special effects were superb! But the sound system sucked; everyone sounded high pitched and screechy. The show opens with a heavy metal band on stage (think Aerosmith) but instead of heavy metal rock they limp through what I can only call a lame Lloyd Weber sort of ballad. Personally, I do not hate anyone enough to recommend this show to them. Very disappointing, despite the kids. It wasnt their fault.
