Lerner and Loewe's western musical returns to Seattle's 5th Avenue stage for the fist time in 24 years. Set in a town of prospectors in 1849, the show explores whether true love can survive in a battle against the lust for gold. Famously adapted into a movie with Lee Marvin and Clint Eastwood, Paint Your Wagon was Lerner and Loewe's fifth collaboration, and contains a barrel-load of classic numbers, from the rousing Rumson to the searching (I Was Born Under a) Wand'rin' Star.
For this adaptation, 5th Avenue are promising a wholly different take on the story. Writer John Marans (Old Wicked Songs) has penned a new book for the show, which tones down the comic elements of the original in favour of a more sweeping, romantic tone. 5th Avenue's Artistic Director David Armstrong is helming the production.
in 1849 California, cantankerous old miner Ben Rumson and his daughter Jennifer discover gold near their camp. News of the strike spreads quickly around, and soon hundreds of gold-hungry prospektors have flocked to the newly formed town of 'Rumson'. But trouble is a brewing as the gold dries up, and Jennifer falls for Julio, an outcast who lives outsde of the town's boundaries.
