Amazonian folklore meets Grimm-esque fairytale in The River Bride
The River Bride, by award-winning Mexican-American playwright Marisela Trevino Orta, plays in Seattle in May 2027. The acclaimed drama incorporates elements of Latin American folklore and inspiration from the fairytales of the Brothers Grimm to create something entirely new in a contemporary format. Winner of the 2013 National Latino Playwriting Award, traditional Amazonian myths and lyrical storytelling come together to make this a truly singular work to witness.
In a small fishing village along the Amazon River, Helena is quietly mourning the upcoming marriage of her sister, Belmira, to Duarte, the man she herself loves. But when a handsome stranger with no memory of his past is rescued from the Amazon River, both sisters’ attentions shift towards him, and both must challenge the boundaries of their loyalty to eachother and the jealousy and desire that take hold.
