Israel's Batsheva Dance Company brings Naharin's electrifying and soulful piece titled MOMO in March 2024. Performed in Naharin's 'Gaga' style, an exhilarating and boundless whirlwind of movement, MOMO sends long roots to the depths of the earth, showcasing themes of archetypes, myths, raw masculinity, and tenderness.
Baroness Batsheva De Rothschild formed the company in 1964 and installed famed choreographer Martha Graham as its first Artistic Director. Hailed as the 'Picasso of Dance', Graham's influence on the art form was huge, and her work laid a key foundation on which all of modern dance was built. Following Graham's departure in 1975, Batsheva began to concentrate more on the work of up-and-coming Israeli choreographers, with Ohad Naharin taking over as Artistic Director in 1990 and propelling the company into a new era.

I have been urging dance critics and my friends to see a ballet two times if they like the piece because one viewing is rarely ever enough to truly appreciate and understand something that took the choreographer months and months to create. The second viewing allow us to slow the movement down, become more familiar, understand why we liked certain parts and even remember sequences that slipped by. We can intellectualize and discuss the piece with greater clarity.
Last week with a near full house at Royce Hall, we got to engage in that process. Bat Sheva in "Venezuela," performed the same ballet twice, in the same evening, first to Gregorian chants, (which did not really compliment the movement,) and than to various genres of music. I do believe that "Venezuela's" great strength was providing us that opportunity of being more familiar with a ballet. If any of you enjoyed 'Venezuela," then next time you see dance think about going twice.
