REMIND ME OF A CRUISE SHIP PRODUCTION

First off it felt like a bait and switch as half of the leads advertised are not in the production, which may explain why the costumes seen so ill fitting. The actor playing the Duke, which apparently is not a substitute, can't sing. Some of the cast are good, dinner just okay, none great. It's a shame. I really wanted to like it, but it just fell flat.

PRETTY DISSAPOINTING

Saw Moulin Rouge with my partner last night and we were very disappointed. You should only pay for this show if you're ready to turn off your brain and clap along to a torch song version of Firework by Katy Perry. As part of the younger generation that this re-work of new pop songs was clearly targeting, I have to say it was not impressive. Many of the song choices were simply absurd even at times when it only serves as an 8 bar references in a medley reminiscent of your local Pop Radio station playlist. With a completely altered story from the movie, don't expect any faithful retelling of the movie you love. Its more a cover band concert that lives & dies on spectacle than a musical version of the movie. If you're willing to pay $60+ for a 3 hour pop song cover show, go for it. Otherwise, press randomize on Netflix - you'll probably be more entertained that way and save on the parking/travel/ticket costs to a night out for another show.

NO SUSPENSE OR SURPRISES

If you’ve seen the movie you know what’s going to happen. The set, costumes, and choreography are all fine. The mashups of pop songs gets exhausting. Almost like an assault. It’s too too much. I had a fifth row center seat. Moved to an empty seat in the back of the Orpheum after intermission. More comfortable. I really enjoyed one performer in particular. Andre Ward plays Toulouse LaTrek fabulously. Overall, I think I didn’t enjoy it as much because I saw the movie so many years ago and trying to recreate that excitement for the stage just didn’t work for me.

MOULIN ROUGE

The performers were good, but the show was disappointing in every other way. The music was changed almost completely, as was the story line. It was a real bait and switch. The show should not be marketed as “Moulin Rouge”, but rather as a 2023 adaptation of the original.

AWFUL

Nothing about this play was authentic. The costumes were far from period. The music was a series of pop songs. I felt like they just strung a bunch of songs together. We left at intermission.

AS A HUGE MOULIN ROUGE FANATIC... JUST NO.

The set, costumes, and performers were beautiful. Outstanding. Harold Zidler was incredible. Everything else fell very flat. Completely strayed from the storyline that is such a masterpiece. The modern songs were awful and unnecessary. They turned a beautiful tragedy into a cheap comedy. I was extremely disappointed. And they made Christian whiny and unbearable. There was no chemistry or story build up. It was pretty, but would have been better as a concert and not a production.

A CRUISE LINE PERFORMANCE

Although the set was beautiful, I’ve seen better performances on Cruise lines. A poor attempt to modernize the score made this a miss in many ways. Intermission exits high.
