Powerful. One of the best librettos I've heard in a while

Winner of the Music Critic's Association's Best New Opera award 2020
Winner of the Music Critic's Association's Best New Opera prize in 2020, this brand new opera from Jeanine Tesori and Tazewell Thompson holds a mirror up to the world we live in today, creating a searing portrait of the African American experience in this country. Told through the life of a young couple from the birth of their son, to his murder at the hands of police, it's a deft examination of the importance of love, community, church, and family and how they matter when faced with the unthinkable.
Good art entertains, but great art provokes a deeper response. With creators like Thompson and Tersori working today, we can be assured that everyone's voice is heard, promoting greater diversity, yet finding the motives that bind us all together.
