The parody to end all parodies, Mark Hollman's Urinetown cleaned up during its Broadway run's award season in 2004, winning three Tonys, three Outer Critics Circle, two Lucillle Lortel and two Obie Awards. The self-conscious satire left no stone unturned in its razor-sharp lampooning of capitalism, bureaucracy, municipal politics and the law, taking things even further by sticking its tongue out at Broadway blockbusters musicals by mimicking the likes of Threepenny Opera and Les Mis. Set in a dystopian future that's unfortunately not far off from our own, the story chronicles the struggles of a city in the midst of a 20 year drought. Its inhabitants are forced to use pay-per-use public amenities, run by the scurrilous Urine Good Company, with dire consequences if they decide to relieve themselves in the bushes - any rule breakers are sent to the sinister and mysterious Urinetown, never to return. When the company tightens its stranglehold on the community by raising its prices, a revolution is sparked by a brave young hero and the daughter of Urine Good Company's very own president...
