FEMI-NOT-SO-MUCH THE MUSICAL

I wanted to love this... at the beginning I was hopeful... but ... Oy... for touting itself as a “feminist” fairy tale it really missed the mark... which is saying something because it shot so many “feminist” arrows into the dark who knows what they were aiming at. The story was a mess of unresolved ideas and pointless characters... no clear antagonist...and the princess who wanted to see a comet suddenly wants a boy-band prince more than anything else? What? The casting looked like it wanted to be diverse but REALLY fell short. No character development. No logical motivation. A muddy explosion of poorly executed storyline. Lovely actors. Great voices. I liked the lighting. Worthless writing and direction. Boring choreography. Confetti doesn’t fix everything.

A TIRED STORY 20 YEARS AGO

As a father of daughters, I really wanted to like this. They promised a new take and I was excited about that. Let's see something new! Alas, the creators forgot one of the most important rules, "You're there to tell a story, not deliver a message". The characters and dialogue only exist to make political points and tear down what has become before them, rather than give us the new story they promised. It's mean spirited at points and as subtle as a sledgehammer. Seriously, if you can't make an anti-gun joke (that in no way fits) land in Seattle, you're doing pretty terribly. The final message that's supposed to be a reveal through the power of interpretive dance would have been boring 20 years ago. Oh wow, look, women can be doctors and soldiers. Who knew? I have never seen an audience leave a play so quickly as I did Bliss.
