EXCELLENT - WAY BETTER THAN EXPECTED

Not sure what people watched with some of the poor reviews, but my whole family loved it (which includes a 12 yo son & 15 yo daughter). Lots of laughs all around and even some tears at the end. The cast was amazing and the performances, stellar. There were two songs that weren't 5 stars for me at least, but if I could give this 4.5 stars I would as it was nearly perfect. Did I mention how excellent the cast was? Do watch it and do take your family if you can.

COULD NOT BE WORSE

I can't remember being so unmoved about a production in quite some time. I can't remember a single melody from the show and thought the lyrics were very rigid and stale. I don't think there is a strong number in the entire show, with the exception of the brilliant 'Zombie/Monster Mrs. Doubtfire' number. Daniel Hillard came off as a mean, manipulative person who only wants to get back at his wife. The updated script "tried" to address body positivity and LGBTQ+ acceptance, but most of those moments fell flat and felt unearned in the end largely due to the show's embrace of toxic masculinity. Daniel's brother and his husband came off as more stereotypical than their movie counterparts, an unnecessary step backwards. Several jokes were lifted from South Park, Family Guy, and 2000s culture...very odd. I saw the second performance of the show, so I'm hoping they revise and edit some of this by the time it hits Broadway. I would not recommend this show to anyone.

AMONG THE WORST MUSICALS I'VE EVER SEEN

I've seen somewhere around 500 musicals in my life and this might take the cake for one of the worst (at least in recent memory). The people saying this was good are either incredibly easily impressed or straight up are lying. I could not wait to leave the theater. It wasn't even "so bad it's funny" it was just a slog to get through. I was embarrassed that I brought people to it. The few chuckles I heard from people in the audience would be at jokes that confused me as to why they were funny. Like... A Paula Deen joke? This show seems like it was written in 2009 and has just been handed off to different writers, none of whom actually rewrote from scratch, but decided to just finish whatever they could with a gun to their head. Not a single salvageable piece. This show was not good or entertaining. I'm honestly shocked that anybody thinks it can make it on Broadway.
